Research shows that participation in these programs can lead to longer stretches of sobriety compared to people who don’t attend. AA is widely recognized and has a long-standing reputation as a cornerstone of addiction recovery. Its focus on alcohol may appeal to those who prefer a specialized approach. However, some critics argue that AA’s spiritual emphasis and reliance on a Higher Power may not resonate with everyone.

Additionally, the 12-Step Program is used as the focus of both fellowships, but the type of addiction is always the main point of focus. We will explore the history, mission, and purpose of each organization, as well as the unique roles that each plays in providing support for individuals struggling with addiction. Finally, we will discuss the importance of understanding the differences between NA and AA in order to determine which program is best suited for the individual. Research has proven the efficacy of NA and its assistance in helping individuals maintain sobriety.

This process eliminates all the toxins from the body so that the treatment can start when the individual is sober.
Differences between aa and na
The program promotes abstaining from alcohol through a spiritually inclined 12-Steps program. Going through the 12-Steps allows members to address the roots of their addiction, make amends with those they’ve hurt, and find healthy ways to improve their lives. AA is a 12-step program, which is based on the belief that a person’s addiction is a spiritual disease and must be addressed through a spiritual solution. NA, however, is what is the difference between aa and na a 12-tradition program, which focuses on the idea that addiction is a physical, mental and spiritual illness and must be treated as such. Like AA, the NA meetings are the core of the organization, providing a space where individuals in recovery can meet regularly to discuss their challenges and successes. These meetings are inclusive and open to anyone with a desire to stop using drugs.
- This distinction influences the discussions in meetings and the language used in program materials.
- However, the core elements such as sharing experiences, providing support, and working through the steps remain consistent.
- Today, AA boasts millions of members participating in over 100,000 groups in approximately 180 countries.
- AA primarily addresses alcohol addiction, while NA caters to those struggling with narcotics addiction.

- By fostering a spirit of cooperation and equality, the traditions help to preserve the integrity and effectiveness of AA’s approach to recovery.

Online AA and NA meetings make it easier to connect with a community without disrupting your daily responsibilities. The Oxford Group, an evangelical Christian fellowship that flourished in the United States and England in the early 1900s, had a strong influence on the origins of AA. AA, on the other hand is more expansive and offers more than just 12-step guidance but also spiritual support and education. Both programs offer similar support and guidance, however, the differences between the two should be taken into account. For instance, while NA focuses on drug and alcohol addiction, AA has a broader scope, focusing on any kind of addictive behavior.
Despite the differing focus on substances and approaches to recovery, Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) share foundational principles that underpin their effectiveness. Both programs are rooted in support group therapy, where members benefit from a community of peers who understand their struggles intimately. Their collaboration led to the creation of a structured framework known as the 12-step program, which remains central to AA’s philosophy today. This program emphasizes concepts like admitting powerlessness over alcohol, seeking spiritual growth, and making amends for past actions.
This adaptation underlines the universality of the 12-step program while respecting the specific challenges faced by individuals recovering from drug addiction. The comparison between AA’s and NA’s 12 steps highlights the flexible and inclusive nature of the 12-step methodology, which is capable of guiding individuals through recovery from various substances. The shared structure fosters a familiar pathway for those transitioning between AA and NA or attending both for comprehensive support.
Some of the therapies offered are evidence-based therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), contingency management, and motivational interviewing. They will help you develop coping strategies as well as discover the reasons for your addiction in a structured, caring environment. For many people, treatment in a rehab facility can accompany other treatments, such as support groups, family therapy, individual therapy, and permanent lifestyle changes. The most effective treatment is typically a combination of treatment plans that are tailored to the individual.

Saliva tests are based on the collection of a saliva sample and its further testing for the presence of drugs. This is a pretty fast method and sometimes allows the detection of very recent use, often within the same time frame as urine tests. However, in the case of some substances, saliva tests may not be as sensitive as urine tests, which could produce ambiguous results. Nevertheless, saliva testing remains highly popular due to its non-invasive nature and ease of sample collection. California NORML breaks down the average time it takes to clear popular drugs, though it’s worth reiterating that everyone processes substances differently. But some companies still try to get around the rules by saying your job is “safety-sensitive,” even if it might not be. You may need to fight back or take legal action if you were treated unfairly. However, these protections usually don’t apply to safety-sensitive jobs or companies that must follow federal rules. What are the legal or workplace consequences, and do you have any recourse?
Prior to the test, management will require you to sign a release enabling your potential employer access to your initial results. Yet, the odds are you won’t get the job you’re applying for, or may even get fired from the one you currently have.
This might help if there was a mistake, but won’t help if the result is real. If you already work there, a positive test could lead to punishment or even being fired. Some employers might give you another chance if you go through a program and test clean later. The role of circadian misalignment indisturbed brain reward function, and its role in the development of alcohol use disorders isthe subject of a recent review by Hasler and Clark (2013).
In addition to loss of gray matter volume and reduced connectivity, downregulation of GABA systems could also partially explain the decrease in both delta powerand the amplitude of evoked delta responses in abstinent alcoholics. However, again, thereare other possible mechanisms that may also contribute to these effects. Rundell et al. (1972) studied seven youngmen over three nights of drinking with alcohol administered over an hour, ending 30minutes before bed, with blood alcohol concentrations at bedtime between 0.05 and 0.095 mgpercent. Data are presented from a baseline night, solution focused therapy techniques three drinking nights and the mean oftwo recovery nights. Prinz et al. (1980) studiedfive young men over nine nights of drinking (seven of them at home) with a 0.8g/Kg dose(0.08 Breath Alcohol Concentration (BAC) on the laboratory nights) consumed over the hourbefore bedtime.

- In larger quantities, alcohol switches from a stimulant to a depressant.

Laboratory based polysomnographic studies of abstinent alcoholics typically show apattern of sleep disturbance with increased wakefulness consistent with self-reports ofpersistent sleep disturbance common in this population. Sleep efficiency is a simple indexof the proportion of the time in bed spent asleep and thus a polysomnographic marker ofgeneral sleep quality. Yules, Freedman, and Chandler (1966)studied three young non-alcohol dependent, men over 5 nights of drinking, with 1g/Kgethanol administered 15 minutes before bedtime. Yules,Lippman and Freedman (1967) studied four young men over three or five nights ofdrinking with 1 g/Kg ethanol administered 4 hours before bedtime.
This hypothesis has not been directly tested, and it should be notedthat other factors may play a role in the increased REM seen in long-term abstinentalcoholics. For example, administration of the tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α) antagonist etanercept led to normalization of REM sleep in 18 abstinentalcoholics (Irwin et al. 2009). Both alcohol and sedatives function in the brain and body as central nervous system depressant substances. This means that they slow down several necessary and life-sustaining functions, such as blood pressure, respiration, and mixing suboxone with alcohol heart rate while also lowering body temperature.
Dependency and addiction
Teach your children never to get into a car driven by a person who has been drinking; assure them that you will pick them up no matter what the hour. However, you can make lifestyle changes to help you reduce your anxiety as well as learn to cope with it.
